Pressure - temperature range of reactions between liquid iron in the outer core and mantle silicates

چکیده
The possibility of reaction between the liquid iron of the Earth's outer core and crystalline silicates ((Mg, Fe)SiOa) of the mantle, MgO., Feo.•SiOa(pv) + O.15Fe(e) = 0.9MgSi03 (pv)+O.2FeO(hpp)+O.O5FeSi(•)+ O.05Si02(st), was proposed by Knittie and Jeanloz(1989,1991) on the basis of exploratory experiments. We calculate Gibbs free-energies for the reactants and the products of the above reaction in order to constrain the pressuretemperature range. Upon application of thermal expansion, equation of state and heat capacity data, we demonstrate that this reaction can occur at pressures as low as 30 GPa at 3500 K, and at temperatures as low as 900 K at the 130 GPa pressure of the present core-mantle boundary. Furthermore, we propose a modified equation of reaction at the core-mantle boundary: Mgo.,Feo.•SiO3(pv)+ 0.3Fe(•) = 0.9MgSiO3 (pv) + 0.3FeO(hpp) + O.1FeSi. Our results imply that similar r6actions may occur during the early accretion history of the Earth.

Shock-wave experiments on pure iron preheated to 1573 K were conducted in the 17-73 GPa range. The shock-wave equation of state ofy-iron at an initial temperature of 1573 K can be fit with u, = 4.102 (0.015) km/s + 1.610(0.014) up with p 0 = 7.413±0.012 Mg/m• We obtain for y-iron's bulk modulus and pressure derivative the values: 124.7±1.1 GPa and 5.44±0.06, respectively. We present new data fo...

Natural olivine with 12 mol % Fe(2)SiO(4) and synthetic orthopyroxenes with 20% and 40% FeSiO(3) were studied beyond the pressure-temperature conditions of the core-mantle boundary. All samples were found to convert entirely or partially into the CaIrO(3) postperovskite structure, which was recently reported for pure MgSiO(3). The incorporation of Fe greatly reduces the pressure needed for the ...
متن کاملSulfur in Earth's Mantle and Its Behavior during Core Formation
Introduction: The density of Earth's outer core requires that about 5-10% of the outer core be composed of elements lighter than Fe-Ni; proposed choices for the "light element" component of Earth's core include H, C, O, Si, S, and combinations of these elements [e.g. 1]. Though samples of Earth's core are not available, mantle samples contain elemental signatures left behind from the formation ...

New shock wave data (to 180 GPa) for pyri-•e (•---•eS2) shocked along (001) demonstrate hat this mineral, in contrast to other sulfides and oxides, does not undergo a major pressure-induced phase change over the entire pressure range (320 GPa) now explored. (This is probably so because of the initial, low-spin 3-d, orbital configuration +2 of Fe ). The primary evidence which indicates that a la...
متن کاملIron-rich silicates in the Earth's D'' layer.
High-pressure experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrate that an iron-rich ferromagnesian silicate phase can be synthesized at the pressure-temperature conditions near the core-mantle boundary. The iron-rich phase is up to 20% denser than any known silicate at the core-mantle boundary. The high mean atomic number of the silicate greatly reduces the seismic velocity and provides an exp...
